The Plessey Cricket Club started in 1986. However, the cricket pitch itself is not so 'new'. It was built in the early 1950's by the then owners of the ground, J S White's shipbuilders. The pitch was laid, and maintained to a very high standard, by the renowned local groundsman, Sandy Morrell, and in the late '50's and early '60's was actually used as an occasional county ground by Hampshire County Cricket Club.

Details of the ground can be found at - Cricinfo - J Samuel White's Ground, Cowes

Full details of the First Class Hampshire matches played here can be found at First-Class Matches played at Cowes (courtesy of the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians)

An aerial photo of the 1956 match is available here - Hants v Worcester - 1956

The grass pitches are now looked after by the current groundsman, and IWCB pitch advisor, Andy Butler. Visit his website

When the firm was taken over by Elliots (an American company) in the late '60's, and the business got into financial difficulties in the early '70's, the facilities were run down and the ground lay dormant for a number of years. The premises were re-opened in 1985, as a joint venture between the Plessey Sports and Social Club and the local council. Since then, the parent club has grown steadily, is even 'bigger' now than it was originally, and is now known as The IOW Community Club.

Up until 1998, the club had always played friendly matches, on Saturdays, Sundays, Midweek afternoons and evenings, as well as providing facilities for local firms etc. to partake in what we call 'Extra's" cricket - i.e. for those that want to play less seriously. In 1997 we entered the Island Knockout Cup for the first time, and in 1998 we entered Division 3 of the Island Sportswear League ( a Saturday competition). League and Cup cricket has been played here since then. There is plenty of 'friendly' cricket still available as well.

New players are always welcome, and are sure to get a game as we have a full fixture list! The club would expect to host approximately 90 games of the various types. There is also a net available at all times, again with an artificial surface.
